Grant: Chippewa Valley ARC – Emergency Trailer and Equipment
Date of Grant: Nov. 6, 2020
Grant Amount: $25,165
Part of the mission of Chippewa Valley Amateur Radio Club (CVARC) is to “provide public service, particularly in emergencies.” The purpose of this grant is to fund the purchase and outfitting of a Ham Radio Emergency Communications trailer along with necessary supporting equipment – including electrical generator, antennas, and radio repeaters. The trailer will include heat and air conditioning to accommodate year-round use. CVARC intends to take this trailer to various schools in the hopes of educating the next generation of ham radio operators. The trailer will also be involved in various forms of supporting activities, such as SKYWARN severe weather spotting.
Update
The Chippewa Valley Amateur Radio Club (CVARC) in Chippewa Falls, WI, leveraged ARDC grant funding to successfully create an Emergency Response Trailer that enhances communications in underserved areas of Chippewa County. The project equipped the club with a trailer, dual-fuel generator, solar power system, Yaesu repeater, and handheld radios with APRS technology. The addition of solar and lithium batteries has ensured reliable power even in challenging conditions.
The project also revitalized the club, increasing membership and volunteer involvement. The trailer will serve in emergencies and as an outreach tool for schools and public events across Chippewa County. With strengthened ties to local emergency services and educational institutions, CVARC is already planning expanded coverage and helping other clubs apply for similar grants.
