Grant: Meshtastic for Wildfire fighters in Argentina
Date: August 2025
Amount: $57,068
WildfireMesh is a group of technology and telecommunications activists who work with free software and open networks. They believe communication tools for emergencies should be accessible, adaptable, and easy to share. Their focus is on creating Spanish-language resources and training so that local communities can learn to use and maintain the tools themselves.
This project introduces Meshtastic, a LoRa-based mesh network, to firefighter brigades in Argentina. During wildfires, cellular towers often fail and repeaters can be damaged, leaving crews without contact. To address this, the team will provide equipment kits, run workshops, and create step-by-step guides in Spanish. They will also test the system in the field and adapt it to firefighting needs. The aim is to give firefighters a dependable backup channel for coordination and safety, while building a community that can carry the work forward on its own.
